When it comes to younger looking skin, there are two abbreviations to always look for – AHA and BHA. But, in between the DHA’s and the other ingredients in skincare, it can easy to overlook AHA’s and BHA’s in your skincare routine.
AHA’s and BHA’s work best when used together, but first it’s important to understand what they are independent of one another.
AHA stands for alpha hydroxy acids. These naturally derived acids can be found in citrus, sugar cane, and milk. Skin chemists have integrated alpha hydroxyl acids in moisturizers, cleansers, and even foundations.
Because they are naturally derived, there are multiple types of alpha hydroxy acids. You’ve probably seen a few of them as critical ingredients in Hale products:
When AHA’s penetrate the skin, they can rejuvenate, exfoliate skin, and stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. AHA’s have been shown to improve the appearance of sun damaged skin and wrinkles.
Because they are an acid, AHA’s have the power to disrupt skin pH if they are not compounded and applied correctly. At Hale, we engineer all of our skincare products with AHA’s to have a less than 10% concentration to ensure your get the best possible results. We even have alpha hydroxy acid options for sensitive skin types.
BHA stands for beta hydroxy acid. Unlike AHA’s, there is only one type of beta hydroxy acid and that is salicylic acid.
Salicylic acid is extracted from willow bark and is commonly found in acne products. With natural pore refining and exfoliating properties, salicylic acid can be found in moisturizers and cleansers.
The most unique property of BHA’s is their lipid solubility. Unlike AHA’s (which are water soluble), BHA’s can penetrate oil found in pores. This makes them a more effective solution for oily, blemish-prone skin types.
When used together, AHA’s and BHA’s keep the surface of skin in its best condition. Both acids penetrate the surface of skin to promote healthy skin cells. Skin products with BHA’s and AHA’s can improve skin’s texture, smooth away the signs of aging, and promote a healthy glow.
Because they are powerful acids, it is important to use a skincare product that gently exfoliates and hydrates at the same time. The ORAC Lifting Complex uses a heavy dose of naturally-sourced antioxidants, alpha hydroxy acids, and beta hydroxy acids to promote healthy, younger looking skin. You can use it twice daily!
