3 Classes of Ingredients to Avoid in Your Skincare Products

You need to read all your skincare product labels carefully. There are some types of ingredients that you need to avoid for the good of your skin and your overall health.

Shelf Life Extenders

Large-scale manufacturers produce huge lots of creams, serums, cleansers, etc. To keep the active ingredients in those products active while they wait to be sold, they need to be chemically stabilized. Many of the compounds used to stabilize formulas do not play nice with the human body, such as:

• Parabens Parabens are chemical compounds that mimic estrogen, and because they do, they can disrupt hormone balances. And, the consequences of hormone imbalance can be dire breast cancer and fertility issues.

• BHA & BHT BHA and BHT are lab-created antioxidants. So, they do the same thing, essentially, as vitamins A, C and E i.e., neutralize free radicals to prevent chemical degradation. But, unlike naturally occurring antioxidants, BHA and BHT disrupt hormone balances and are known carcinogens.

• Formaldehyde Formaldehyde is a strong preservative so strong it preserves dead tissue from decaying. If that's not reason enough to not want it in your skincare products, then avoid it because it is a known carcinogen and neurotoxin and associated with the development of asthma.

Artificial Colors and Fragrances

Product manufacturers are not required to disclose all the ingredients for their fragrance or coloring formulas. That means items called fragrance or D&C Red 27 (and similar ingredients) themselves contain several chemicals, any of which could be allergenic, carcinogenic and/or endocrine disrupting.

Lather and Stickiness Enhancers

Consumers have been trained to expect cleansers to create a rich foamy lather and creams to spread easily without running. The ingredients that allow these product properties include:

• Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) this suds-maker is known to irritate epithelial tissue i.e., your skin and the lining of your lungs and eyes
• Phthalates these compounds soften and increase pliability of polymers to make them stick but also disrupt endocrine function and balance
